BMW Fault Codes 452A and 4D4A – Does Your DPF Need Replacing?
Has a diagnostic scan brought up 452A or 4D4A on your BMW? These codes relate to the diesel particulate filter (DPF), but they don’t automatically mean the filter is blocked or that you need an expensive replacement.
At Advanced Remaps & DPF Cleaning in Hartlepool, we check the filter’s condition before recommending the next step.
What do these codes mean?
On applicable BMW diesel models, these codes are associated with the DPF’s calculated service life:
452A: An information warning that the DPF is approaching its calculated service-life limit.
4D4A: A later warning associated with the DPF reaching or exceeding that calculated limit.
The exact description and test procedure depend on the vehicle’s engine and ECU software.
Does this mean the DPF is blocked?
The codes alone cannot confirm a blockage. The engine computer’s calculated filter life and the filter’s actual condition need to be assessed together.
A filter may still flow adequately when a service-life warning appears. Equally, a filter can become restricted earlier if regeneration problems or other engine faults allow deposits to build up.
That’s why simply clearing the codes—or replacing the DPF without testing—can miss the real issue.
How do we check it?
Our assessment can include:
Reading the fault codes and checking for related engine faults.
Checking DPF pressure readings at idle and raised engine speed.
Confirming pressure readings manually where needed.
Reviewing available soot, ash and regeneration data.
Checking whether sensor readings are believable.
Pressure readings must be assessed against the correct specifications for the particular engine.
Can cleaning help?
Professional cleaning may be suitable if testing confirms restriction and the filter is structurally sound. The appropriate cleaning method depends on the deposits present and the filter’s condition.
A damaged, cracked or melted filter may need replacing. Any underlying fault also needs addressing to help prevent the problem returning.
A service-life reset does not physically clean a filter. Any reset or adaptation should follow the appropriate procedure after the filter has been assessed and the necessary work completed.
