Custom Remapping a VW T5.1 LWB Camper: Why We Datalog Before We Tune

When this 2011 Volkswagen Transporter T5.1 LWB Camper arrived at Advanced Remaps, the customer wasn’t looking for an aggressive remap or simply the biggest power figures possible.

They had a very specific reason for wanting the vehicle remapped.

The camper covers a lot of miles, so improved fuel efficiency was important. At the same time, they wanted more pulling power, particularly when climbing hills and driving the van under load.

Most importantly, they wanted to achieve this without compromising the vehicle’s reliability.

A custom remap starts with the vehicle

Rather than simply applying a generic calibration, we started by carrying out live datalogging.

Using our tuning equipment, we monitored the vehicle during real-world driving and recorded the relevant engine parameters. This allowed us to see how the vehicle was actually performing before making any changes.

The vehicle is fitted with a 2.0 TDI 1968cc engine and Bosch EDC17CP20 ECU, and the data collected gave us a much better understanding of how this particular van was operating.

Building the calibration around the customer’s needs

The information from the datalogging was then used to help tailor the calibration specifically around what the customer wanted from the camper.

The objective wasn’t to chase an impressive dyno number.

Instead, the focus was on producing a smooth and usable increase in performance, with stronger pulling power where it is most useful, while keeping the customer’s priorities of fuel economy and reliability at the forefront.

This is where we believe custom tuning makes a real difference.

A camper used for long-distance driving has very different requirements from a van being driven purely for performance. The calibration needs to suit the vehicle, how it is used and what the owner actually wants to achieve.

The finished result

The T5.1 now has a calibration developed with the customer’s specific requirements in mind, rather than simply using a one-size-fits-all approach.

For us, custom remapping isn’t about making every vehicle as powerful as possible. It’s about making the vehicle better suited to the person driving it.

Whether the priority is performance, economy, towing or simply better drivability, we can use datalogging and vehicle-specific information to help develop the right approach.
