DPF Deletes: What Every Vehicle Owner Needs to Know

We recently had this Range Rover come into us after the customer experienced serious running issues following previous work on the vehicle.
The customer had originally wanted the vehicle’s DPF problem resolved. However, the vehicle had subsequently been running with the DPF system altered electronically while the physical DPF was still fitted to the vehicle.
When we carried out our own diagnostics, the results were extremely concerning.
The DPF was showing over 700 mbar of pressure at idle and over 1,000 mbar under revs.
For comparison, many healthy vehicles will typically show readings of well below 20 mbar at idle and around 50 mbar under revs.
The DPF was therefore extremely restricted and creating significant exhaust back pressure. We also found that the vehicle had suffered further issues, including a damaged turbo and a rattling timing chain.
Why is this important?
One thing we really want vehicle owners to understand is that a software change doesn’t physically remove a DPF from the exhaust system.
If a DPF remains physically fitted to the vehicle but the vehicle is no longer managing the DPF and its regeneration strategy correctly, the filter can continue to accumulate soot and ash.
Eventually, excessive restriction can cause very high exhaust back pressure. This can put additional strain on the exhaust system and turbocharger and potentially contribute to much more expensive problems.
In this case, the DPF couldn’t be cleaned
After carrying out our diagnostics, we determined that this particular DPF was simply too badly restricted to be realistically cleaned.
That’s not something we say often.
We carry out a large number of DPF cleans, and our aim is always to clean and save the original DPF wherever it is viable to do so. However, sometimes a filter reaches a point where replacement is the correct solution.
In this case, we fitted a brand-new DPF and restored the vehicle’s ECU calibration so that the DPF system could operate correctly again and carry out its regeneration process as intended.
We have also recommended a trusted local specialist to the customer to deal with the vehicle’s turbo and timing chain issues.
The important takeaway
This isn’t about blaming another business or telling people what they should or shouldn’t do with their vehicle.
It’s simply about making vehicle owners aware of what can happen when a DPF problem isn’t properly diagnosed.
If you’re considering any work involving your vehicle’s DPF, make sure you understand exactly what is being done — both electronically and physically.
A software change does not remove a physically blocked DPF.
And if the underlying problem isn’t addressed, what starts as a DPF issue can potentially turn into a much larger repair bill.
