Exhaust Filter Full – Visit Dealer: What Does It Mean?

3 min read

If your vehicle is displaying “Exhaust Filter Full – Visit Dealer”, as shown in the image above, it is a clear indication that the vehicle’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has become heavily loaded and the vehicle is no longer able to clear the filter through its normal regeneration process.

This warning should not be ignored. Continuing to drive with a heavily blocked DPF can potentially lead to further faults, reduced performance and expensive repairs.

What Does “Exhaust Filter Full” Mean?

A DPF is designed to capture soot and particulate matter from the vehicle’s exhaust gases. Under normal driving conditions, the vehicle periodically carries out a regeneration, where the temperature of the exhaust system is raised to burn off accumulated soot.

However, if the vehicle is mainly used for short journeys, spends a lot of time in traffic, or has an underlying engine fault, regeneration may not complete successfully.

Over time, soot and ash can build up inside the DPF.

When the vehicle reaches a critical level, you may see a message such as:

“Exhaust Filter Full – Visit Dealer”

At this stage, a normal drive may no longer be enough to resolve the problem.

Common Symptoms of a Blocked DPF

A blocked or restricted DPF can cause a number of symptoms, including:

  • Exhaust Filter Full warning

  • DPF warning light

  • Engine management light

  • Reduced engine power

  • Limp mode

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Frequent attempted regenerations

  • Cooling fans running after the engine is switched off

  • Poor acceleration

  • Higher exhaust back pressure

In severe cases, the vehicle may prevent regeneration altogether to protect the engine and exhaust system.

Why Does a DPF Become Blocked?

There are several reasons why a DPF can become blocked.

Common causes include:

Short journeys – The engine and exhaust system may not reach the temperatures required for regeneration.

Failed regenerations – Repeated interrupted regenerations can cause soot levels to continue increasing.

Engine faults – Problems with sensors, injectors, EGR systems, turbochargers or other components can cause excessive soot production.

Ash accumulation – Unlike soot, ash cannot simply be burned away during a normal regeneration. Over time it can occupy valuable space inside the DPF and contribute to restriction.

Don’t Just Clear the Fault Codes

One of the biggest mistakes we see is simply clearing the DPF fault codes and sending the vehicle away.

A proper DPF diagnosis should establish why the filter has become restricted in the first place.

At Advanced DPF Cleaning, we recommend carrying out proper diagnostic checks, including checking the vehicle’s DPF data and exhaust pressure readings before deciding on the correct cleaning procedure.

A DPF can sometimes show a relatively low calculated soot figure while still having high exhaust back pressure due to ash accumulation or restriction within the filter.

This is why relying on a single soot reading isn’t always enough.

Professional DPF Cleaning

If your vehicle is displaying “Exhaust Filter Full – Visit Dealer”, professional DPF cleaning may be an option before replacing the filter.

Our DPF cleaning service is designed to remove accumulated contamination and restore the filter as effectively as possible without automatically resorting to expensive DPF replacement.

We deal with blocked DPFs on a wide range of vehicles and can carry out diagnostic checks to establish the condition of the system before recommending the appropriate cleaning procedure.

What Should You Do If You See This Warning?

If your vehicle is displaying “Exhaust Filter Full – Visit Dealer”, don’t ignore it.

Continuing to drive with a severely restricted DPF can potentially cause additional problems and may eventually result in the vehicle entering limp mode.

The first step should be a proper DPF diagnostic and health check to establish:

  • DPF soot loading

  • Exhaust pressure/back pressure

  • Differential pressure readings

  • Regeneration history where available

  • Relevant fault codes

  • Sensor operation

  • Possible underlying causes

Once the condition of the DPF has been established, we can advise whether a professional DPF clean is suitable.
