Land Rover Exhaust Filter Full Warning – What It Means & How to Fix It

Has your Land Rover or Jaguar displayed an “Exhaust Filter Full” warning on the dashboard?

This is one of the most common problems we see, and while it may seem like a minor warning at first, ignoring it can quickly lead to reduced engine performance, limp mode, expensive repairs, and even complete DPF failure.

At Advanced Remaps & DPF Cleaning, we specialise in professional Land Rover and Jaguar DPF cleaning. Our fully mobile service comes directly to your home, workplace, or roadside location, helping you get back on the road quickly without the inconvenience of visiting a garage.

What Does “Exhaust Filter Full” Mean?

Your Land Rover’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is designed to trap harmful soot produced during normal driving. Over time, this soot builds up inside the filter.

Normally, the vehicle automatically cleans the DPF through a process called regeneration, where the engine burns the soot away at high temperatures. However, if the vehicle is mainly used for short journeys or the regeneration process is interrupted, soot continues to build up until the filter becomes blocked.

When this happens, your Land Rover will display an “Exhaust Filter Full” warning.

Amber Exhaust Filter Warning

An amber warning light means the DPF is becoming blocked but can often still be cleaned by allowing the vehicle to complete a regeneration.

We recommend:

  • Driving continuously for at least 20–30 minutes

  • Maintaining speeds of 50 mph or above where it is safe and legal to do so

  • Keeping the engine at a steady speed to allow regeneration to complete

If the warning remains on after the drive, or regeneration cannot complete, the vehicle may require a forced regeneration or professional DPF cleaning.

Ignoring the amber warning can result in the filter becoming completely blocked.

Red Exhaust Filter Warning

A red exhaust filter warning indicates the DPF is now heavily blocked or another fault is preventing regeneration.

You may notice:

  • Significant loss of power

  • Limp mode

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Engine management light

  • Failed regeneration attempts

  • Poor acceleration

At this stage, continuing to drive can make the problem worse and may result in expensive damage to the DPF, turbocharger or engine.

We recommend having the vehicle professionally diagnosed as soon as possible.
