Peugeot BlueHDi AdBlue Countdown – Full DPF & DeNOx Diagnostic Investigation

  • 2 min read

When this Peugeot BlueHDi arrived at Advanced DPF Cleaning & Remaps, the vehicle had an AdBlue countdown warning on the dashboard.

Interestingly, there were no stored fault codes, so rather than simply clearing the warning or replacing expensive AdBlue components, we carried out a detailed diagnostic investigation of the vehicle’s emissions system.

What did we check?

We carried out a comprehensive assessment of the DeNOx/SCR and DPF systems, including:

  • NOx sensor live data

  • NOx readings before and after the DeNOx catalyst

  • Upstream and downstream NOx sensor status

  • AdBlue/DEF system parameters

  • AdBlue injection data

  • DeNOx system efficiency

  • DeNOx system pressure

  • AdBlue system operation

  • Available manufacturer-specific special functions

  • Engine running data at idle

  • Engine running data at approximately 2,000 RPM

The vehicle was also assessed with the engine running to compare the readings under different operating conditions.

Could the DPF be contributing to the AdBlue warning?

One important part of the diagnosis was the condition of the DPF.

A DPF that is heavily restricted can create excessive exhaust back-pressure and affect exhaust gas flow and temperatures. Because the DPF and SCR/AdBlue systems are both part of the vehicle’s emissions system, problems with one system can potentially affect the operation and diagnosis of the other.

This is why we don’t recommend automatically assuming that an AdBlue countdown means the AdBlue pump, injector or NOx sensor needs replacing.

Why proper diagnosis matters

AdBlue and NOx-related faults can become very expensive if parts are replaced through guesswork.

A proper diagnostic process allows us to look at the actual live data and system operation before recommending repairs.

In this case, the vehicle had no straightforward fault code pointing directly to a failed component, so the diagnosis required looking at the relationship between the DPF, exhaust system, NOx sensors and DeNOx/SCR system.

Our approach

Diagnose first. Repair second.

We aim to identify the underlying cause rather than simply clear a warning light or replace parts unnecessarily.

If your vehicle has an AdBlue countdown, emissions warning, DPF warning or recurring regeneration problem, a full diagnostic assessment can help establish what is actually happening before you spend money on replacement components.
