Renault Megane Diagnostic – DTC038096 / P0380-96 Glow Plug & Preheating Fault

We recently carried out a diagnostic inspection on this Renault Megane diesel after a fault was identified relating to the vehicle’s preheating system.

🔧 Fault Code Identified: DTC038096 / P0380-96

During the diagnostic scan, we identified DTC038096, which is equivalent to the OBD-II P0380-96 fault code.

This fault relates to the glow plug/preheating system and indicates a malfunction within the glow plug circuit or its associated control system.

The preheating system is particularly important on diesel engines, as the glow plugs help raise the temperature inside the combustion chamber to assist with starting and efficient combustion when the engine is cold.

What Can Cause This Fault?

There are several possible causes of a P0380-related fault, including:

• Faulty glow plug(s)

• Glow plug wiring or electrical connections

• Glow plug relay/control module

• Power supply or earth issues

• Internal failure within the preheating control system

• A fault with the circuit’s diagnostic feedback

Importantly, simply replacing the glow plugs isn’t always the correct solution. A proper diagnostic test is recommended to determine exactly where the fault is originating.

⚠️ Why Should It Be Checked?

A fault within the glow plug system can lead to:

• Difficult cold starting

• Longer cranking times

• Rough running immediately after starting

• Increased smoke during cold starts

• Poor cold-start combustion

• Potential warning lights or stored fault codes

If the vehicle is experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s worth investigating the fault rather than simply clearing the code.
